Boston (8/14/2024) - As the Coalition continues to celebrate the passage of the omnibus gun safety bill, An Act Modernizing Firearm Laws, we also have an important update.
In the days after Governor Healey signed this bill into law, Gun Owners’ Action League (GOAL), the local affiliate of the NRA, began the process of filing a referendum petition to repeal this lifesaving piece of legislation.
A referendum petition creates a ballot question in order to repeal an existing law.
In order to get this question on the 2026 ballot, GOAL must collect 49,716 signatures in favor of the referendum. If they are successful, there will be a question on the 2026 ballot that asks if voters approve of the gun violence prevention law. The majority of voters must vote “no” in order to repeal the law.
This process is still in its early stages, but rest assured that we are monitoring the situation closely and will keep you informed as new information becomes available. The Coalition is as committed as ever to ensuring that Massachusetts remains one of the safest states in the nation.
